We've all been plagued by cruddy Wi-Fi, whether at the airport, our local coffee shop or even just a friend's house. And while you can always fall back to your cellular connection on your iPhone, the same isn't necessarily true for your laptop or your tablet. Fortunately, you can share your iPhone's cellular connection with your laptop and other electronic devices, turning it into an impromptu wireless hotspot.

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Personal Hotspot.
3. Slide the Personal Hotspot switch to the On position. Keep in mind you won't be able to connect to Wi-Fi networks on your iPhone while this is enabled, and certain features, such as AirDrop, might not function.
4. To set a password for the Wi-Fi network you're creating, tap Wi-Fi Password.
5. Enter a password of at least eight characters.
6. Tap Done.
6. Tap Done.
7. Navigate to wherever you usually connect to Wi-Fi on your laptop, tablet or other connected device. (You also may be able to connect via the slower Bluetooth, or over USB by connecting your phone to your laptop.)
8. Select the network that has the same name as your iPhone. (On a Mac or iOS device, you may be able to easily identify it by the linked chain icon.)
9. When prompted, enter the password you chose in step 5. You should now be online. Your iPhone will tell you how many other devices are using your connection.
10. To disable the feature -- and avoid chewing up your data allowance -- tap the blue status bar to return to the Personal Hotspot settings and slide the Personal Hotspot switch to the Off position.

Introduction
After working with a couple of retail cellular providers for the last five years, I came to realize that one of the most overlooked features of the iPhone is the ability to create your own personal hotspot, or WiFi connection using your phone. Also known as 'tethering'. This Instructable will show you step-by-step, with images, how to use your Apple iPhone 6 (iOS 9.0.2) to create a personal hotspot. This feature is great if you have children and are on the road, meaning they cannot stream their cartoons on their iPad without internet connection (unless their iPad has built-in wireless service, of course).
Do you need to be able to use an internet device when you are not near a WiFi connection? Follow these simple instructions and you can! (Please review your data usage and details with your provider. Some providers required a minimum data package.)

Verify with your mobile provider that you meet the minimum requirements needed to utilize this feature. Then, make sure that your device is fully charged and functioning.
One of the iPhone's best features is its ability to share your cellular data connection with other devices, which is known as Personal Hotspot, or tethering. Personal Hotspot may be easy to use, but there's a lot to understand about it. Get answers to common questions and troubleshooting issues about Personal Hotspot on the iPhone in this article.
What Is Tethering?
Tethering is a way to share an iPhone's 3G or 4G data connection with other nearby computers and mobile devices (iPads with 3G or 4G can also be used as Personal Hotspots). When tethering is enabled, the iPhone functions like a cellular modem or Wi-Fi hotspot and broadcasts its internet connection to other devices that are connected to it. All data sent to and from those devices is routed through the iPhone to the internet. With tethering, any computer or other device that can connect to a Wi-Fi network can get online anywhere you can access the web on your phone.
How Is Tethering Different From Personal Hotspot?
They're the same thing. Personal Hotspot is just the name that Apple uses for the generic tethering feature on the iPhone. When using tethering on your iPhone, look for the Personal Hotspot options and menus.
The iPhone isn't the only device that offers tethering features. In fact, you can buy a standalone hotspot device from many phone companies. To learn more about those options, check out The 6 Best Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspots to Buy.
What Kind of Devices Can Connect Via iPhone Tethering?
Almost any kind of computing device that can use the internet can also connect to an iPhone using tethering. Desktops, laptops, iPod touches, iPads, gaming systems, and other tablets are all compatible with Personal Hotspot.
How Do Devices Connect to Personal Hotspot?
Devices can connect to the iPhone via Personal Hotspot in one of three ways:
- USB.
When you tether a device to the iPhone, you connect that device to the iPhone using just one of these options at a time. Tethering over Wi-Fi works just like connecting to any other Wi-Fi network. Using Bluetooth is similar to pairing to a Bluetooth accessory. Simply connecting the iPhone to a device with a standard cable is enough to tether over USB.
What Models of the iPhone Support Tethering?
Every model of the iPhone starting with the iPhone 3GS supports tethering.
What Version of the iOS Is Required for Personal Hotspot?
In order to use Personal Hotspot on your iPhone, you need to be running iOS 4 or higher (Because iOS 4 came out way back in 2011, virtually every iPhone still in use today is running that or higher).
What Is the Range of a Personal Hotspot?
The distance that tethered devices can be apart from each other while still working depends on how they're connected. A device tethered over USB only has a range as long as the USB cable being used. Tethering over Bluetooth gives a range of a couple dozen feet, while Wi-Fi connections stretch a little farther (throughout a house or office, for example).
How Do I Get Personal Hotspot on My iPhone?
The Personal Hotspot feature is built into the iOS that comes on every iPhone. But you need more than just the feature to use Personal Hotspot. You also need a data plan from your phone company that includes it.
These days, tethering is included as a default option on most monthly plans from most major phone companies. In a few instances tethering requires an additional monthly fee. Contact your phone company, or log into your phone company account online, to see if you already have Personal Hotspot or if you need to add it.
How Do I Know if Tethering Is Enabled on My Account?
Checking with your phone company is definitely one way. But probably the easiest way is to check on your iPhone by following these steps:
- Tap the Settings app to open it.
- Scroll down to the Personal Hotspot section. The simple presence of this option should indicate that you have Personal Hotspot on your phone, but continue to the next step to be totally sure.
- Tap Personal Hotspot. If the next screen has a slider (whether it's set to on or off), Personal Hotspot is available to you.
What Does Personal Hotspot Cost?
In most cases, Personal Hotspot itself doesn't cost anything. Generally speaking, you just pay for the data used by it along with all of your other data use. This all depends on what monthly plan you have and what phone company you use. If you've got an unlimited data plan, Personal Hotspot is almost definitely included. In a few cases, it may cost $10 or more dollars per month extra.
Can I Keep Unlimited Data With Personal Hotspot?
Good news: unlimited data plans that support tethering are back! For a few years after the debut of the iPhone, unlimited monthly plans were common. Then phone companies changed to plans that capped the amount of data that any one person could use and charged people more for exceeding those caps. In those situations, you often had to choose between having tethering or unlimited data.
These days, phone companies are offering unlimited data plans that include tethering. These plans still have caps, but not the same kind. The difference is that, when you exceed the cap, your data speeds — including tethering — are drastically slowed until the next month.
Does Data Used by Tethered Devices Count Against My Data Limit?
Yes. All the data used by devices tethered to your iPhone over Personal Hotspot counts against your monthly data limit. This means you'll want to keep a close eye on your data use and ask people tethered to you not to dos Missing From My Phone. Help!
Sometimes, the Personal Hotspot option will go missing from your iPhone even though you have the feature available as part of your monthly phone plan. To solve this problem, check out How to Fix Missing Personal Hotspot on iPhone.
First things first, there could be more than one reason behind the missing Personal Hotspot on your iDevice running iOS 12. If you have run into this issue, check out the following solutions that can help you bring Personal Hotspot into action again!
Recently, I found “Personal Hotspot” missing on my iPhone. It had happened to me for the first time, so I was kind of began to wonder what had suddenly gone wrong.
After a bit of digging, I figured out that it’s not a new phenomenon and many iOS users had run into the issue at some time or the other. Along the way, I also discovered some tricks, and one of them luckily saved my day!
For the context, Personal Hotspot gets activated when you use a data network. It effectively converts your iOS device into a Wi-fi router, and any nearby device can use this Wifi stream from your iPhone to connect to the internet.
Note: Before we go about fixing it, make sure your network (and the data plan) do have the Personal Hotspot feature enabled. If it is but you’re still not seeing the Personal Hotspot feature, try the following:
Personal Hotspot Missing Issue in iOS 12 on iPhone and iPad
Solution #1. Turn OFF and Turn ON Cellular Data
One of the first things you should do is give cellular data a fresh start. To do so, open Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data and turn off the switch next to it.
Now, reboot your iPhone and then wait for some time. Then, turn on cellular.
Personal Hotspot should return now. If it hasn’t, move to the next solution.
Recently, when the Personal Hotspot feature went missing on my iPhone, I tried this trick, and it worked. Don’t ask me how or why because this solution sounds so dumb, but it just worked.
Solution #2. Remove Previous APN Changes
If you installed any previous APN certificates (from websites like Unlockit), you might want to remove that and retry. Sometimes, these installed APN certificates might cause a conflict within the code and might be preventing the Personal Hotspot feature from showing up.
This again is a solution that worked on one of our iPhones. To remove any installed APN changes, you should go to Settings → General → Scroll down to where it says Profile and then remove the certificate.
Solution #3. Remove SIM, Restart, Insert SIM
This is not a solution per se but since we did this and Personal Hotspot appeared magically, I’m just pitching this too. What you do is:
Remove the SIM tray → Reboot the iPhone → Insert the SIM tray.
You might have to wait a while before the signal picks up and the network is established. Now, head over to Settings → General → Cellular → and turn ON/OFF data again. When you turn back ON, scroll down to see if Personal Hotspot is visible.
Solution #4. Check out if Someone has Changed Your Name
If someone has changed your name or it appears incorrectly, it might affect Personal Hotspot. So, ensure that your name is written correctly. Well, such tricks do sound crazy a bit at times it’s worth checking out all the boxes.
Open Settings app → General → About → Name and edit the name.
Solution #5. Update Carrier Settings, If Available
Carrier providers often release new updates to fix the issues or improve the performance. So, check out if there is an update from the carrier pending.
Open Settings → General → About. If there is the latest update, you will get a prompt to update the carrier.

Solution #6. Reset Network Settings
If you are still struggling to get rid of the issue, try this trusted solution: reset network settings alone. I’m not asking you to reset the whole iPhone although the best remedy described often is restoring the iPhone. But since “nobody got time for that” you might try resetting the network settings.
Open Settings app → General → Reset → Reset Network Settings and confirm.
Solution #7. Update iOS
I guess this issue could also be due to a miscellaneous bug. Therefore, updating the iPhone can be worth a try. I say it because Apple often introduces several bug fixes and performance improvements. So, let’s hope that the Personal Hotspot issue is resolved with the system update.
Before going for the software update, ensure that your iPhone has up to 50% of power and connected to Wi-Fi. Then, head over to Settings → General → Software Update. Now, if there is an update available, download and install it right now.
Solution #8. Contact Network Operator to Fix it
If everything fails, you’ll have to call your network provider directly.
In some cases, the network guys send you a link which installs a profile on your iPhone/iPad. This enables Personal Hotspot automatically once you install the profile certificate.
That’s pretty much it!
Fixed the Issue?
Assuming you have finally got the better of the issue. So, which one of the above tricks worked for you? Besides, if you could resolve the problem by trying out any other solution, tell us about that as well.
